On October 4, 2022, the Treaty 4 flag and the Métis Nation flag were raised during a ceremony at the Chinook Education Centre. Chinook School Division is proud to work in an educational partnership with Nekaneet First Nation and the Métis Nation of Saskatchewan Western Region 3. This event represents our commitment to continuing the authentic engagement between and within our communities. We hope that the flying of the flags acts as a reminder that we will work to create new attitudes and understandings.

Chinook is committed to answering the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, especially those specific to education. Students from Central and Maverick schools attended the flag raising, as a way to build student capacity for intercultural understanding, empathy, and mutual respect: Call to Action #63. Today’s ceremony also helps us work to close learning gaps and increase educational attainment as we build relationships with families and communities, while respecting and honouring treaty relationships: Call to Action #10.

Chinook is dedicated to building cultural awareness to promote understanding through the inclusion of First Nations, Métis and Inuit content in our teaching. We will continue to provide opportunities and resources to support Chinook staff members in increasing their understanding of Indigenous history. We will be a place where students are supported and encouraged to strengthen their cultural identity and experience pride and belonging through the inclusion of ceremonies and practices, such as the flag raising at CEC.
