All-Weather Track for the Southwest Region

June 04, 2014

The City of Swift Current and Chinook School Division have approved an all-weather track that will be located at the Swift Current Comprehensive High School. The partners have agreed to equally share costs of developing and maintaining the new 8 lane all-weather synthetic surface track with related field amenities, as users from both parties will have access to the facility.

"This is another great example of two separate organizations collaborating on a project that will provide a considerable benefit for the users and our communities. On our own, the resources would be unattainable for an upgrade that would be on par with other regions in the province," said Randy Beler, Chinook School Division Board Chair. "As a result of this partnership, all students within Chinook will have access to a first-rate facility and the region will have the capacity to host major provincial and even national events."

"This all-weather track will complement our recreational opportunities in Swift Current," said Mayor Jerrod Schafer. "It makes us a draw for other communities in the southwest to use our track and it's going to be something that any member of our community can enjoy in the evening."

Since 2008 the Chinook School Division, Swift Current Comprehensive High School and the City of Swift Current have been researching affordable solutions for the necessary Track and Field improvements at the High School. In 2012 the parties shared in design and technical costs required to tender the project and the tender has been awarded to Playtech Enterprises for synthetic surfacing and South Rock Ltd. for the civil work.

The City of Swift Current Council and Chinook School Division Board have now officially approved the project to move ahead and they hope to have the new track completed by early Fall 2013. A joint use agreement will be developed between the partners for routine maintenance, future track resurfacing and amenities, scheduling, policies and practices.
