Chinook Music Week

June 04, 2014

February 10-16, 2013
This past weekend, members of the Comp Choral and Jazz programs took part in the annual Rotary Jazz Retreat in Cypress Hills, Saskatchewan. Brent Ghiglione, director of bands/conducting at the University of Regina and John Trepp (one of Canada's top choral conductors) spent the weekend working with our students. 42 students participated from three ensembles. Attending were the Comp's senior jazz ensemble, 9 0'Clock Jazz, the vocal jazz ensemble and the Chamber Singers. This a fantastic learning oportunity for the students and they look forward to the retreat every year.

The Karen Finnsson Saxophone Quartet will be our featured artists for Chinook Music Week. This Regina based ensemble has been performing together for years and will offer engaging and entertaining concerts and workshops for our students. Our focus for this years Chinook Music Week is woodwinds. Students from Maple Creek, Gull Lake, Success, Cabri, Waldeck, Stewart Valley, Wymark, Irwin, Fairview and the Swift Current Comp will take part in guided workshops and attend performances by the group.

Each year, the Music Curriculum Advisory Committee, with the support of Chinook School Division, plans and puts on a week dedicated to music in the division. The focus shifts each year. In 2012 we had drum and classroom music workshops. We've also featured Brass, Percusion, Choral and have brought in conductors to work with our students.
