In 1994, UNESCO inaugurated October 5 as World Teachersā Day to commemorate the joint UNESCO and International Labour Organizationās (ILO) signing of the Recommendations Concerning the Status of Teachers.
World Teachersā Day represents a significant token of the awareness, understanding and appreciation displayed for the vital contribution that teachers make to education and development. On October 5, along with over 100 countries around the world, the Canadian Teachersā Federation and its Member organizations across the country celebrate World Teachersā Day through a public awareness campaign that highlights the contributions of the teaching profession.
