Chinook implementing requirement for vaccination or negative testing for staff

The priority of the Chinook Board of Education is ensuring the health, safety and well-being of students and staff. The Board has asked administration to proceed with developing an administrative procedure that will require all staff members to show proof of full COVID-19 vaccination or recent negative COVID-19 testing status.

Information was shared with all Chinook staff and more details, including the implementation date, will be released in the coming weeks.

The Medical Health Officer, Public Health and local physicians have informed the Board that vaccination is an important tool in protecting students, staff and families against COVID-19. This is especially important in our schools, where most students are not yet eligible to be vaccinated.

The Government of Saskatchewan implemented a COVID-19 vaccination program on October 1, 2021 for all provincial government and crown corporation employees. A similar requirement is being implemented at many other venues and businesses locally and across the province. When they announced the program, the provincial government recommended that school divisions consider vaccination requirements for employees. The Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation and Saskatchewan School Boards Association have also encouraged school divisions to implement vaccination requirements.

Chinook School Division respects the privacy of all individuals. For those who do not wish to disclose their vaccine status, the school division will require proof of current COVID-free status through a current, recognized test. Verification of both will be done in a confidential, sensitive and respectful manner.

As responsible employers and citizens, we are doing our part to keep employees, students, families and communities safe as they work, learn and play in our schools and facilities.

As indicated in previous communications, our Return to School Plan will be released this week. The Chinook Board is currently working diligently to finalize a plan to ensure that the health, safety and wellness of students and staff remains a priority. We plan to release the details in the afternoon on Thursday, August 26th, and they will be posted on our social media channels and website.

Information on the distance learning option will follow the release of the plan as well. Families will have time to review the plan and make a choice for their children to register for distance learning or attend their local school.

The Fall 2021 Chinook Return to School Plan will be shared with families and staff the week of August 23. As local and provincial COVID-19 data have varied over the summer, we feel it is best to finalize plans based on the most current conditions.

In July, the provincial government lifted restrictive measures and public health officials stated that it is safe for schools to resume traditional in-class learning. When classes in Chinook schools begin as planned on September 2nd, we will follow provincial guidelines while continuing to protect the health and safety of students and staff, as schools transition back to pre-pandemic operations.

We are consulting with local public health officials and following their guidance to develop the plan, which will focus on continuing enhanced cleaning, improved ventilation and other general practices previously implemented in schools. We will also be prepared to increase protective measures as necessary to mitigate the risk of COVID-19 and will continue to follow the recommendations by the provincial government and SHA.
