The grade 7/8 Arts Ed class at Waldeck School had the opportunity to take in the Keepsakes of Conflict exhibition at the Swift Current Art Gallery on Monday, November 5th in honour of the 100th year anniversary of the First World War. The exhibition features Trench Art and other war related craft. Trench art is defined as any item made by soldiers, prisoners of war and civilians, from war material directly, or any other material, as long as it and they are associated with armed conflict or its consequences. It was a unique experience for them to be able to view firsthand beautiful artwork created by Canadian soldiers as a method of rehabilitation in some cases, gifts for loved one and a display of talent and skill. Students were able to take part in a workshop after the tour where they recreated the experience of trench art. Their artwork was displayed for the Remembrance Day assembly.
