2020-2021 School Calendar Vote

November 12, 2019

To: Chinook Parents/Guardians and Staff

This year, all Chinook employees and parents may vote for their preferred calendar for the 2020-2021 school year. The Chinook Calendar Committee has developed two calendar options. Typically, we try to set our Division calendar early so families may plan in a proactive manner.

Committee Members:
  • Teresa Broberg – Bus Driver, Gull Lake
  • Tracy Philp – Teacher/Principal, Waldeck Colony
  • Erin Kinney – Office Manager, Central School
  • Char Peters – CTA Vice President/Teacher, Wymark School
  • Ken Garinger – Superintendent of HR
  • Val Gordon – SWAC Athletic Coordinator
  • Ruth Weiner – Educational Assistant, SCCHS
  • Duane Regier – Vice Principal, SCCHS
  • Kyle McIntyre – Director of Education
Both calendar options will be posted online for parents and staff to vote. Voting is open to parents and staff November 13–22, 2019. Links to the calendar options and online survey are below.

The goal of this consultation process is to have a calendar recommended to the Chinook Board of Education shortly after this year’s Christmas break.

Key Points
  • The next two years, legislation requires students begin school prior to Labour Day. Our calendars have been developed with the change in mind.
  • The chosen calendar will need to be reviewed and approved by the board in early January and then approved by the Ministry of Education.
  • One school admin day has been moved from the end of June to the beginning of the year to permit teachers more time in their classrooms prior to start up.
  • As in the past, schools will have the opportunity to work with their local school communities to determine specific student conference times and formats.
Defined Requirements
  • The Saskatchewan Education Act requires the following:
    • A minimum of 950 hours of instructional time per year, a max of 1044 hours;
    • Six weeks of summer vacation;
    • Post Labour Day student start time, with an exception if Labour Day falls on September 5 or later (2020 Labour Day is September 7);
    • A Christmas break that begins no later than December 23 and ends not sooner than January 2;
    • A Spring break with no more than 5 consecutive days.
  • Ministry of Education Provincial Examinations – January 25-28, June 23-28).
  • Chinook Board of Education requires (3 professional learning community days; 2 student conference days; 3 professional development days; 3 admin days; and one convention day.
Calendar Options A and B (197 days including non-instructional days; 186 instructional days)
  • Three traditional breaks
  • September 3 - Students begin
  • Teacher Convention (A: October 13 or B: October 9)
  • Christmas break (A: December 24 - January 4 or B: December 19 - January 3)
  • February break (February 15-19)
  • Long weekend in March for students and families
  • Easter break (April 5-9)
  • Students finish June 28
The vote results will be gathered by the calendar committee who will make a recommendation to the Chinook Board of Education. The Board will have final say on the calendar at the January Board of Education meeting.
This initial calendar is based on teaching days. Support staff contracts will be based on the final calendar, but employment dates may vary.
