| Chinook Schools Celebrate Music Week |
|
Chinook Music Week is celebrated around the Division the week of February 6-10. Each year, a group of music teachers in Chinook pick a theme to focus on with their students. The teachers then work together to coordinate a number of workshops and performances at their respective schools. The theme for this year is Classroom Music. On February 9 and 10, Marlene Hinz and Joseph Ashong of Saskatoon will be sharing their musical talents with approximately 500 students across the division. Workshops on Orff and World Drumming will take place in Maple Creek, Gull Lake and Swift Current (Ashley Park, Central, Irwin, Fairview, and SCCHS) over the two days. “As teachers, we're always looking to bring in interesting and exceptional clinicians to work with our students. Exposing students to many styles and genres of music is key to developing a young person's critical ear,” says Aaron Thingelstad, Director of Instrumental Music at SCCHS and Chinook Music Week committee member, “There is research that speaks to the importance of music education; whether it is improved spatial intelligence, math skills, literacy, or other areas. It's been great having the support from Chinook to put on a week like this and I'm sure it will be a tremendous learning experience for the students and teachers alike.”
Director of Education, Liam Choo-Foo is proud of the initiative that Chinook music teachers have taken to put on such an event, “Chinook is very happy to support our educators in their goal to raise awareness, and stimulate a keener appreciation and understanding of music in children. Music, and the Arts in general, is an essential part of a well-rounded education.”
Chinook Music Week is an opportunity to showcase some of the great talent that exists in our schools, from elementary to high school. This year marks the 6th annual Chinook Music Week. The celebration began back in 2006, when Chinook music educators were looking for ways to collaborate and bring in top-flight performers, educators and clinicians to work with their students.
