School Division Stands Up to Bullying Youth workers and Student Service Counselors at Chinook are leading an initiative for 2011-2012 encompassing bullying, an issue that impacts schools and students on a daily basis. The initiative is designed to bring students and staff together to celebrate diversity and is a unique way to “Stand Up” to bullying. The Chinook Wide Bullying Awareness Campaign committee, comprised of Chinook Youth Workers and Student Service Counselors, is promoting two important days for southwest schools to join the movement. Friday, November 18, 2011 is “International Stand Up to Bullying Day” and Friday, April 20, 2012 will be Chinook’s “Day of Pink”. “We hope that this movement is a success and will help curb the incidents of bullying within our schools and in our communities,” said Carlin Darby, Youth Worker at Chinook, “We want to create more awareness and see everyone ‘Stand Up’ to bullying.” Schools within Chinook School Division are promoting awareness throughout the week in November through a variety of activities, including pink shirt day, movies, presentations, displays, contests, art projects and other events. Liam Choo-Foo, Director of Education, says these types of initiatives are vital to creating a safe, healthy educational environment where there is mutual respect, “Bullying is an issue we take very seriously. Chinook is proud to support the Bullying Awareness Campaign and it is our hope that the movement has a positive effect within our schools every single day.” |
