On Tuesday, October 18, a group of SCCHS outdoor education students travelled down to the Grasslands to be part of the third black-footed ferret release in the Grasslands National Park. The species was extirpated (almost extinct) from Canada since the 70's....and there has been a breeding program to bring the numbers up from seven to thousands. The release was sponsored by The Prairie Learning Centre.
The students met up with park staff, Toronto Zoo staff, Calgary zoo staff, and the media to release another fifteen of these ferrets back into the wild. As a result, our club was featured in a story on the CBC national news on Saturday, October 22.
