MATH MOMENTUM - “Possibilities are Endless”

Goal: It is our intention that all students in Chinook will be meeting or exceeding Chinook expectations in math on Chinook division wide math assessments over time. In the immediate future we will measure the cohorts in Gr. 3, 6, and 9 with Chinook Assessments; our target is for 25% more students meeting or exceeding Chinook expectations in math by June 2014.

Math has been identified as a priority in the division based on declining local, provincial and national assessment results in math. In June 2010, students in Chinook were assessed in grades 3, 6 and 9 to determine the baseline data. The Chinook Math Committee, which consists mainly of teachers, reviewed the base line data. They made recommendations for weighting of various areas, changes in future assessments, levels of achievement and goal options. Chinook coordinators and senior administration were involved in the process as well, and a goal was presented and approved by the Board today.

Math Momentum is being launched on the heels of a celebration of the Balanced Literacy initiative. Balanced Literacy became a focus of the division three years ago. The results and success stories to date have indicated the effectiveness of such a program, and Chinook students experienced a tremendous amount of growth in reading. A literacy maintenance plan has been put into place, and the focus will now turn to numeracy for the next three years.

“Now that we have been through the process of an initiative such as Balanced Literacy, we are confident that Math Momentum will have a profound positive effect on our students and instructional staff in the area of numeracy,” explains Chinook’s Director of Education, Liam Choo-Foo “Math Coaches and Lead Math Teachers have been put into place within the schools to provide training and support in First Steps in Math, assessment, planning, setting goals and follow-up.” Every teacher has been oriented to the program, and every new teacher will receive orientation as well. All teaching staff will participate in ongoing workshops and training over the course of the next three years.

Interim assessments will be done on an annual basis within the three-year plan to provide an indication of where Chinook School Division is at in meeting the Math Momentum goal.
